Kyle

One Year Later

(Weeks After the Super Bowl)

“Kyle won us another one!” “Kyle won us another one!”

Fans cheered and waved their bright Falcon flags from the sidewalk as the championship parade neared the mid-way point.  My ‘I’m Better Than Grayson Connors’ T-shirt bore the scent of a champagne shower, and my MVP trophy gleamed in the bright sunlight.

Leaning over the oversized ‘We Love You, Kyle!’ float, I held up my phone and snapped a few more pictures of the crowd.

“You’ve hired five different photographers for the day, Kyle.” Courtney pulled me back. “Don’t you have enough?”

“For the two of us, yes. But I’ll never have enough for Grayson,” I said. “I need to make sure that he never forgets this moment. I want it to burn in his memory until next season, when we go for a three-peat.”

“You’ve sent him over a hundred pictures so far.”

“That’s it? I haven’t even reached the halfway point, then.”

She laughed. “I need to ask you something important before this is over.”

“Hmmm.” I tugged at the press pass around her neck. “Is this on or off the record?”

“Off.” She smiled. “You know that I’ll never write about you since it’s a conflict of interest.”

“You also know that I can’t help but double-check. I’m listening.”

“It’s about my former college roommate, Judy-April.”

“Never heard of her.” I shrugged. “Next question.”

“Her grandfather is Reginald Turner, Kyle.”

“Sounds like another name that I’ve never heard before.”

“He’s a huge shareholder in your team,” she said. “He’s also very close friends with the owner, Mr. Bausch.”

“What’s the question, Court?”

“Apparently, Mr. Bausch cornered Mr. Turner and forced him to place Judy-April on the ‘Indefinite No-Go’ list for the skybox, the moment you came into the league.” She looked into my eyes. “He said that he wasn’t sure what you had against her or how you even knew her, but that you refused to meet with him in person until that was done.”

“I’m still waiting for your question.”

“Well, for one, is that true?”

“Maybe.” I pressed a finger against her lips. “And if the next question is ‘Why?’ it’s because she hurt the woman I love too many times during our senior year of college. I didn’t appreciate it back then, and I didn’t want her to ever be around if you ever flew back to the States to see me.”

Her eyes widened. “You’re dead-ass serious, aren’t you?”

“I researched the hell out of her the first night you brought Julia over to my place.” I shrugged. “Would you like me to reverse her No-Go for next season or something?”

“She should stay on that list forever.”

“I thought so.” I smiled. “Any other questions?”

“One more…About Graham.”

“If he’s dead, I didn’t do it.”

“He got into some legal trouble a few months after we broke up and it finally caught up with him,” she said. “Someone reported him for mail fraud. Was that person you?”

I stared at her, letting the look in my eyes answer that question.

“Potentially losing you to him over what he did was bad enough,” I said, cupping her face in my hands. “Just in case you didn’t take me back, I had to make sure that I wouldn’t have to suffer a second loss.”

“For what it’s worth—” She paused, her cheeks flushed red. “I love you, but you really are a sore loser, Kyle.”

“I’ve never denied that.” I kissed her lips. “As long as I always win what matters the most …”
