KYLE: THEN

Oakland Tap & Brews was the only place on campus where I could count on being left alone for a few hours. The only place where I could sit in peace and wonder why I was dealing with the worst bout of blue balls I’d ever experienced in my life.

Why the hell am I still thinking about Courtney Johnson?

As I finished my drink, the bell over the door sounded.

I looked over to see Nadira Williams—a woman I’d taken a few freshman courses with, walk inside the café.

Showing off her perfect white smile, she was one of the most gorgeous women on this campus, and she knew it. With her beautiful, caramel-colored skin and stunning hazel eyes, she could make any guy do a double-take whenever she entered the room.

However, her biggest flaw was being friends with Charlotte Taylor—the woman who was currently hogging all of Grayson’s time. Not only that, but she was a Physics major, and she tended to speak in equations and complex sentences that were far too long.

I’d flirted with her a few times over the years, but she’d given me her trademark blank stare on every occasion. Then again, since she no longer said, “Get the hell away from me,” that had to be progress.

Walking over and taking a seat next to her, I signaled for another drink.

Nadira tilted her head to the side and smiled. “Hey there, Kyle. What’s going on with you lately?”

Yep. Definitely progress…

“Glad you asked.” I cleared my throat. “I have an interesting proposal for you. Since my best friend is dating your best friend—”

“Hell no.” She cut me off before I could even finish. “That’s never happening.”

“I was only proposing a lunch to get to know each other better, since our best friends have completely lost their minds.”

“It’s still a hell no.” She laughed and untied her scarf. “Shouldn’t you be at a frat party right now?”

“It was canceled.” I lied. I had no interest in parties right now.

“Oh, that’s so sad,” she said. “Maybe try hanging out at the library then.”

“It’s closed for repairs. Something about the bar tap exploding, I think.”

“I was talking about the actual library, Kyle.” She shook her head. “The one with the books.”

“As if I would ever go there for the hell of it.” I tapped my fingers against the bar, realizing that I had nothing to lose by talking to her. “I think that something is severely wrong with me.”

“You’re just now realizing that?”

“I think I like someone.”

“I’ll pray for her.”

“I can’t get her off my mind.”

“If you give me her number, I’ll warn her in advance.”

“Funny,” I said, sighing. “I had my life all planned out, and I was certain that it was one hundred percent on track. Up until a few weeks ago, that is.”

“You’re not the only one.” She sipped her drink. “I feel like senior year has been nothing like I planned. If I’d seen some of this coming, I may have tried to prevent it.”

I raised my eyebrow, saying nothing. Getting close to Courtney was unexpected, but I couldn’t bring myself to say that I regretted a single second of it.

I only wish it’d happened sooner.

“Any progress on building a time machine, then?” I asked. “Surely that falls under your area of expertise.”

“I wish that I could build one.” She looked down. “I fucking wish …”

We sat in silence for several moments, and before I could tell her that I’d cover her bill, the bell over the door sounded once more.

I looked over at the guy who was walking in, noticed Nadira suddenly blushing and smoothing her shirt.

What the hell?

“You’re here to meet that guy?” I asked, looking over at him in utter disbelief.

“Please don’t tell anyone.” She suddenly grabbed my arm. “Please, Kyle.”

“I might as well be the king of secrets at this point.” I stood to my feet. “I won’t tell a soul, Nadira. But just so we’re clear, he’s—”

“I know,” she said, cutting me off. “I know…”
